What is a Controller?

A Controller in Valorant are mostly Agents who have smokes, walls, and other vision-blocking abilities. They use their abilities to gain more space for their team or to force enemies into unfavorable situations. They can also use their abilities to deny intel from enemies.

They are best when playing back and using their abilities to simply help their team get into the site. They have arguably the most important abilities in the entire game. Entire rounds are sometimes determined by what utilities a Controller has left. They are simply that important

Now that we’ve established what a Valorant Controller is, it’s time to take a look at each one.

Brimstone

Brimstone is by far the easiest Valorant Controller to use. This makes him the perfect pick for beginners. You get to select exactly where his smokes land. Brim’s smokes are also among the biggest and longest-lasting in the game, making it perfect for blocking vision. To round his kit out, he also has a Stim Beacon which buffs allies, a molly, and an AOE damaging ultimate.

Omen

Omen is one of the more flexible Valorant Controllers. He has long-range smokes, making him a great lurker or flanking Agent. He can also set his team up using his blind and easily get to unique positions through his two teleports. Overall, Omen is a more aggressive Controller, whether it be through lurking, or by simply infiltrating enemy lines.

Viper

Viper is a Controller that has been climbing the power ranks lately. She’s been one of the most picked Agents in pro play and is by far the best Controller in large maps. She has a wall, a smoke, two mollies, and a huge space-taking ultimate. The hardest thing about Viper is knowing when and where to place her wall. If you can master her skills, she’s definitely a force to reckon with.

Astra

Next up, we have one of the hardest Valorant Agents to use in Astra. Astra is one of the more unique Agents because her skills require her to place Stars before being used. However, she can only place Stars while in her vulnerable Astral Form. In the right hands, she’s definitely one of the best Valorant Controllers in the game because of her various skills that can be used in a variety of creative ways.

Harbor

The final Controller in Valorant is Harbor. Harbor has a controllable wall that he can bend at will and a shorter moving wall that he can use to take space. He also has a smoke that blocks bullets, and an ultimate that can force enemies away. Harbor can be a great pick for aggressive teams because of the way he can help to push and take space.

What is your Role as a Controller?

As a Controller, your main role is to simply smoke or wall off common angles played by enemies. This allows your entry fraggers to check fewer angles, worry about fewer areas, and easily lead the squad to the site. You can also IGL and strategize for your team, because of the way you can “control” the map.

On Defenders, your role doesn’t change much. You just help delay pushes by blocking entry points and using your abilities to help during site retakes. Overall, Controllers have a tough job. One wrong smoke can cost your team the round. You need to be smart and timely whenever you’re using your abilities. You also can’t be reckless and die early because your team mostly depends on you to block vision.
