What Kind of Game Will Total War: Pharaoh Be?

Total War: Pharaoh Coming Out

Total War: Pharaoh will be the latest entry in Creative Assembly’s massively popular Total War series. It’s a series that needs no introduction as it’s one of the most popular grand-strategy series on the market right now, even rivaling the likes of Paradox games.

That being said. Over the last couple of years, there’s been a divide within the Total War community. This divide came about after the release of Warhammer 1, which became one of Creative Assembly’s most successful products. It also marked Total War’s first step into the fantasy genre.

Since then, the Total War series has been divided into “Fantasy Total War” and “Historical Total War”. But, because of the massive success of Fantasy Total War, many of its design elements have been incorporated into Historical Total War, much to the dismay of the historical fans.

Those very same concerns are now being targeted against Total War: Pharoah. Even though Pharaoh is technically considered a historical title, it still incorporates many of the elements that are considered a core part of Fantasy Total War; like unit health bars for example.

This is the reason why many historical fans are skeptical of Total War: Pharaoh, and the main reason why the game’s announcement was met with so much skepticism.

Still. It’s undeniable that Total War: Pharoah is a step in the right direction, at least when Historical Total War is concerned. The newly introduced unit formations and weather mechanics are a testament to that. It remains to be seen how far CA will go after that though.

Why Has It Taken So Long for Total War: Pharoah to be Released?

Pharaoh

Total War: Pharoah’s announcement is quite recent, all things considered. The game was announced back in May 2023 via trailer, so it technically hasn’t been “that long”. However, it’s still different than a regular Total War title, and here’s why.

Pharoah is being developed by Creative Assembly Sophia, rather than the main Creative Assembly studio. CA Sophia are known for their previous work on Total War: Troy, which wasn’t that well received amongst the community. That fact is also one of the reasons why so many fans are skeptical about Pharoah.

The previous “historical” game that CA Sophia made wasn’t historical at all, as it was more of an interpretation of the Trojan War, rather than an actual historical depiction. That being said. Total War: Troy was technically a sagas game, which Pharoah also technically is; even though it doesn’t carry the moniker.

All that aside. If you’re interested in exploring the Bronze Age collapse, there probably won’t be a better game for that than Total War: Pharoah. While waiting for Pharoah to come out, why not occupy yourself with some of the games being released in August? And if you don’t like the options, you can also check out some of the games that came out in July. There’s something for everyone.
