What Kind of Game is Assassin’s Creed Mirage Going to Be?

Assassin's Creed Mirage coming out

According to Ubisoft, Assassin’s Creed Mirage is supposed to be the long-awaited return to the “traditional Assassin’s Creed formula. Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you might have noticed that the last few Assassin’s Creed games have been “less than historical,” to say the least.

But! All of that is going to change with Assassin’s Creed Mirage. The game is entirely doing away with the RPG elements of previous games and is returning to a more traditional style of progression, where items are locked behind the story, instead of arbitrary levels.

However, the biggest change comes in the form of map design. Even though the map is going to be a lot smaller than previous entries, it will almost entirely be traversable by means of parkour, something that was a staple of earlier Assassin’s Creeds.

Another change that is quite noticeable is the main protagonist himself, Basim. For starters, he actually looks like an Assassin. Sure, Eivor and Kassandra looked cool. But they hardly looked the part of an Assassin. Basim on the other hand, has every staple of an Assassin. From the white robes to the hidden blade.

If all that sounds like something that you would be interested in, then you should definitely keep your eyes on Assassins Creed Mirage.

Why Has It Taken So Long for Mirage to Be Released?

Assassin's Creed Mirage

This question has two possible interpretations. Why has the game itself been in development for so long, and, why has it taken so long for the Assassin’s Creed series to come back to its roots? So let’s answer both.

Compared to some other games, Assassin’s Creed Mirage hasn’t been in development for that long, all things considered. The game was originally leaked in 2022, under the codename “Project Rift.” Ubisoft had originally intended it to be an expansion pack for Valhalla, but it later grew into its own standalone project.

And to answer the second question. Technically, the Assassin’s Creed series isn’t fully coming back to its roots. Mirage is intended to be a smaller project and not a mainline title. Its main purpose is to be an homage to the original Assassin’s Creed, which was released 15 years ago. Hence the return to a more traditional design style.

That being said. Mirage can also be considered as sort of a test by Ubisoft. If the game exceeds expectations and does really well on the market, it’ll be a clear indicator to Ubisoft that the fans have been missing the traditional Assassin’s Creed formula. And who knows, we may see more traditional Assassin’s Creed games as a result of that. Only time will tell.

While waiting for AC Mirage to release, why not try some of the games that are being released in August? And if those are not to your test, there’s always July to look back at.
