Catalyst can be an extremely strong Legend when placed in the right hands. She can quite literally cut the battlefield in half and lockdown buildings with ease. However, she can also be completely useless if you don’t use her skills correctly.

We’ve got you covered with our Apex Legends Catalyst guide, complete with tips and tricks when playing as her.

Locked Out Angles

Catalyst’s Barricade passive may look weak, but it’s actually pretty strong if you know how to use it correctly. Most new Apex Legends Catalyst players look at the Barricade and automatically think that it’s only good for camping. While this is true, there are still a few other things you can do with it.

An example is to open the Barricaded door slowly to create a small gap. This allows you to fire from a unique angle that most enemies won’t suspect. Just make sure you’re carrying a good ranged weapon like the R-301 Carbine to take advantage of it.

Trapped Inside

Another great way to use your passive is by trapping enemies inside buildings. This works better on smaller structures with only a few possible escape routes. Remember, enemies can’t open Barricades without breaking them, but you and your team can. This makes it easier for you to control the fight.

You can also throw a couple of grenades inside to cause a bit more chaos if you wanted to, causing enemies to scramble and forcing them to find a different path.

Got your Flank

Using Piercing Spikes is a great way to hold flanks, guard entry or exit points, and watch your back in general. It may not be as great as a Crypto drone, but it’s definitely better than nothing! The 15 damage per second that it causes isn’t too shabby either.

You can also use your Piercing Spikes while healing, reloading, or firing. This makes it a great way to block enemies or prevent them from chasing you.

Hiding Between the Spikes

As we’ve mentioned, your trap spikes are great at watching flanks. But the top Apex Legends Catalysts players also use it as a way to camouflage themselves while crouching.

Of course, you aren’t going to be completely invisible. But it makes it very difficult for enemies to keep track of you. This is applicable to your own Piercing Spikes or to enemy Catalysts.

Nothing but a Wall Between Us

It’s no secret that your Dark Veil is one of the best tools to create space and zone enemies. It creates a wall between you and your enemies and blocks vision. It’s also a great tool to escape or hide from enemies because they can’t see where you’re going.

The slow and blind is a deadly combo that you can easily punish whenever enemies go through your wall. However, you can also confuse enemies by going back and forth on each side and using the wall as cover.

Any aspiring Apex Legends Catalyst main should know how to play around her wall. This means both using it defensively and aggressively.

The Best Counter

There aren’t too many counters to Catalyst. While you can destroy her Barricade and Piercing Spikes, her Dark Veil is a different story. It doesn’t matter what they do, enemies will always get blinded and slowed whenever they pass through Dark Veil.

However, Catalyst herself is immune to the effects of Dark Veil. This is true no matter if you created the wall yourself, or if an enemy Catalyst did it. It turns out that the best counter to any Apex Legends Catalyst player, is another Catalyst.

If Catalyst proves to be too difficult for you, make sure to try out some of the more beginner-friendly Legends to help you climb those ranks.
