In a surprise announcement last week, EA announced that it was shutting down Apex Legends Mobile as well as Battlefield Mobile — two popular titles in the mobile Battle Royale category. Fans of the Call of Duty franchise will recall that Activision also plans to launch its own mobile battle royale with Warzone Mobile later in 2023, with select users getting a preview in December of 2022.

The cancellation of Apex Legends Mobile will be sure to raise some questions internally at Activision to better understand Apex Legends’ failure in the mobile space and whether Warzone Mobile will be able to overcome the same obstacles or whether it might need to go back to the drawing board to avoid a hasty launch.

Popular content creator, @Ferg, opined that the keys to success for Warzone Mobile are steady content, launch marketing, and optimization for lower-end devices.

All three of these areas make a ton of sense as critical pillars for Warzone Mobile’s success — new content will keep users engaged and marketing as well as performance optimization will increase the total player base, which will be critical to reduce queueing time and improve match fairness, which are critical aspects of Battle Royales.

When it comes to content, fans of COD who have been following Warzone 2’s launch may be feeling nervous. Many players feel that Warzone 2’s initial release felt unfinished, with only 1 playable map and several core gameplay mechanics that feel clunky or untuned. Perhaps the delivery of Warzone 2 Season 2 and the subsequent reception from the community will give us some clues as to how Warzone Mobile might play out.
