Key Takeaways

  • Torbjorn is best on maps which allow him to easily set up his Turret and get value from it, such as Numbani.
  • Torbjorn struggles on maps which make it difficult for him to set up his Turret, such as Nepal: Village if his team loses the first fight.
  • Torbjorn counters dive heroes such as Winston and Sombra due to his combination of Turret and short-range secondary fire.
  • Torbjorn is countered by heroes that outclass him at medium range and can easily kill his Turret, such as Zenyatta and Hanzo.

Torbjorn Quick Tips

  • Torbjorn has 200 health, with 50 armor. His armor makes him tankier than most other damage (DPS) and support heroes, but this durability is offset by his wide hitbox.
  • Torbjorn’s Turret will automatically target either the closest hero, or any hero within its range that Torbjorn has recently damaged with his primary or secondary fire.
  • Despite his Turret being a major part of his kit, skilled Torbjorn players will do most of their damage with his primary fire, and his secondary fire in niche situations.
  • Skilled Torbjorn players should download the Z League app to find teammates who will enable his unique style of play.

Rivet Gun (Primary and Secondary Fire)

Torbjorn’s primary fire shoots a small projectile which deals 70 damage upon impact. His secondary fire is a hitscan shotgun that can deal up to 125 damage if the target is close enough and every bullet hits. Like other shotgun weapons, Rivet Gun’s secondary fire has significant damage falloff, meaning Torbjorn’s primary fire is his most effective way to deal damage in almost all situations. To get maximum value from picking Torbjorn, players need to be able to land primary fire shots, and especially headshots—a headshot and a body shot can quickly two-tap an enemy damage (DPS) or support hero and turn the tide of the teamfight.

Turret

Once thrown, Torbjorn’s Turret takes three seconds to set up and has a range of 40 meters in every direction. His Turret deals 14 damage per 0.25 seconds, or 56 damage per second. The Turret has 200 health and can be destroyed by enemy players.

If destroyed, the ability goes on a 10 second cooldown. The cooldown is only five seconds if not destroyed, meaning players can rapidly redeploy the Turret when needed—for example, on payload maps when the objective rounds a corner. The Turret may not be redeployed while shooting. Torbjorn can repair his Turret by taking out his hammer and hitting the Turret with it.

Torbjorn’s gameplay revolves around knowing where to position his Turret, when to let it die, and when to repair it. Torbjorn’s damage output is significantly increased if his Turret is built and firing, but at the same time, spending too much time babysitting the Turret can result in players not doing enough damage with his Rivet Gun.

Overload

Overload increases Torbjorn’s movement speed, rate of fire, and reload speed. It also grants 100 armor instantly. The ability can be used either offensively or defensively with great effect, but Torbjorn is vulnerable due to his wide hitbox and lack of mobility abilities when Overload is on cooldown. Therefore, especially at higher ranks, Torbjorn players need to intelligently use or save Overload depending on the dynamics of the ongoing teamfight.

Molten Core (Ultimate)

Molten Core allows Torbjorn to shoot out chunks of lava that stick to the ground wherever they land. If enemy players are hit by a chunk of lava, they take 25 damage. Each pool of lava does 160 damage per second while an enemy player is standing on it.

Molten Core can be an extremely effective ultimate when used correctly. Torbjorn players should aim to seal off retreats from enemy players with lava, forcing them to either take damage from the lava or stay in compromising positions. While firing his ultimate, Torbjorn is vulnerable, so using his ultimate while under pressure may result in little to no value. Molten Core can be combined with many other ultimates, such as Zarya’s Graviton Surge, to force players into the damage radius of the lava pools.
