CS:GO Weapons: A Comprehensive Beginner’s Guide Key Takeaways

  • There are 35 different in-game weapons to choose from.
  • Armor, utility, and a defuse kit on CT-side are important factors to consider during the buy phase.
  • Even if you die, you will always have a pistol and a knife at the beginning of the next round.

What are CS:GO Weapons?

Counter-Strike: Global Offensive or CS:GO for short is a game all about armed combat, which naturally means there’s a plethora of weapons to choose from on the server. There are a total of 35 unique weapons in CS:GO, more than any other game in the franchise’s history. Each one of them are used to kill opposing players to earn monetary rewards, create opportunities for success, and eventually give your side the round victory.

In CS:GO’s most popular game mode, 5vs5, whether competitive ranked or casual, a player may carry only one primary weapon, one secondary, and one melee weapon. Primary weapons are classified into SMGs, Rifles, and Heavy weapons. The only secondary weapons that can be used are Pistols, and a knife is the only melee weapon in the game. At the beginning of each round, a player will spawn with their starting pistol and knife even if they died previously, however picking up a different pistol and surviving through the round will result in that weapon being carried over instead.

Primary weapons can be bought at the beginning of the round at the buy menu and only at the designated buy zones, which are on each team’s designated spawn point. Most weapons can be dropped and lost upon death, with the knife being the only exception to this rule.

What else should you know about CS:GO Weapons?

Money in the bank isn’t the only thing to consider when it comes to choosing which weapon to use for each round. Equipment such as armor, a defuse kit for CTs, and grenades are also crucial for each round and given that they also come with a price tag, one must take them into consideration before choosing a primary weapon.

Another is what kind of situation the team might be in. An eco round, one which typically occurs after a series of losses, means not buying anything other than possibly armor or an upgraded pistol while a full-buy would result in a larger spending output. It’s a good practice to always communicate with your teammates and have a clear plan for each round before making any purchases.
