Recently, Respawn released a new game mode to Apex Legend: Hardcore Royale. The new game mode brought quite a few changes to traditional Battle Royale mechanics that we’ve come to expect from Apex Legend. A list of the adjustments are as follows:

  • White Armor Only
  • No Helmets
  • No Armor Swapping
  • Limited Heads Up Display (HUD)
  • Ring starts at Maximum Damage

The combination of these changes makes the gameplay much more methodical, with players questioning their every move in order to stay alive and avoid detection.

What becomes more intriguing is that Apex Legends Hardcore Royale plays quite similar then to what players are currently experiencing with Warzone 2.0 (slower, more methodical gameplay). While it really isn’t working out for Warzone fans, could it become a hit in Apex Legends? Perhaps the key is to give players choice — not picking one gameplay type over the other but rather providing users the option to play either fast paced or slow paced. However, the difficulty with more choice is that queue times tend to be longer for all game modes as the playerbase becomes split.
