The Apex Legends Global Series (ALGS) Spring Split took place this weekend with Team Solo Mid (TSM) taking top honors in the tournament. One trend that seems to be picking up the pace is the proliferation of controller gamers at the top of the pro circuit. While controller players are still the minority, there are several professional teams that exclusively use controllers, like G2 or mixed controller and M&K teams, like Luminosity. Players who opt for the controller are typically choosing the controller for the Aim Assist advantage in close-quarters combat, which is usually implemented in shooters to balance the stick against the mouse’s precision.

While controllers are still the minority in pro play, it’s the overwhelming majority of non-pros, even among Predator ranked players:

This alarming stat has birthed a few anti aim assist evangelists as M&K loyalists are calling for a nerf to the controller’s advantage. One such fan is Twitter user @CornFuel, who was asked to remove his home-made “Aim Assist = Aim Bot” sign from the crowd at the tournament venue for the ALGS Split 1 tournament. “That was my sign. They legit took it within 5 min”, explains @CornFuel.

Clearly, this is a sore spot for Respawn and EA as it was obvious that they did not want the sign to be in the background of the broadcast. One could argue that it could be interpreted as an attack on players who prefer the controller over M&K but it seems rather drastic for a message that isn’t directed at any specific player.
