In Warzone 2, as with most shooters, players are able to choose between using a controller or the combination of keyboard and mouse while playing on PC. There’s a lot of debate on this topic and we see pros who are in either camp. In this article we’ll discuss some of the pros and cons of each choice.

Reasons for using the controller

The first advantage of a controller is that you’ll get baked-in Aim Assist. In Warzone 2, there are several types of Aim Assist types, each with their advantages and disadvantages. It will be important to read these descriptions and test out which works best for your playstyle. While there are a few different settings, each are comprised of two fundamental types of Aim Assist: Rotational and Slowdown. Rotational Aim Assist helps your sights track an enemy as you are strafing, thus rotating your aim slightly automatically. Slowdown does what the name implies — slows down your aim sensitivity as you are closer to an enemy. The combination of these assists means that controller is quite strong in mid to close range combat.

The second advantage of the controller is that the physical movement of the stick is relatively short vs. a mouse, so you can limit the movement of your arm when doing panning motions. This can also have long term ergonomic benefits (ever heard of carpal tunnel?).

While you might think that keyboard and mouse has an inherent advantage with the number of mappable inputs, this is simply not the case these days with custom controllers, like the ones made by SCUF, where with the implementation of paddles on the back of the controller, you’ll likely not be left wanting for more.

Lastly, if you’re a social gamer than plays with friends in different locations, it’s better to get accustomed to a controller so you’re not tied to your personal equipment. This is the nice thing about controllers — they come standard with each console so you’ll feel right at home whether it’s your XBOX at home or at your mate’s.

Reason for using keyboard and mouse

The origins of online competitive play for FPS are tied to the keyboard and mouse. The fast, whipping rotational movement was key to get an edge over your competitors. The main advantage to using a mouse these days has to do with aim sensitivity. It has an advantage in long range and sniping situations where you want to maintain extremely accurate first and follow-up shots.

Secondarily, keyboard and mouse tends to be the more transferrable skillset across titles as each title will have it’s own tuning when it comes to controller Aim Assist.

At the end of the day, it comes down to playstyle and familiarity. If you like to run and gun at close range, the controller is likely best for you. However, if you like to keep your distance and already play other titles with keyboard & mouse, why change now?
