History only remembers a few people that have ascended to godhood on account of their merits, and Guan Yu is one of them. But does Smite do him justice? This is an interesting fact that not many players know, Guan Yu was an actual person that lived in the 3rd century C.E. His achievements, and character earned him a reputation so, widespread, so, venerated, that by the Sui dynasty, people started venerating him as a saint of war. That is the reason we have Guan Yu as a playable God in Smite today, but is he any good? Let’s find out.

Guan Yu Abilities

Smite Guan Yu Guide Abilities

Guan Yu is a juggernaut on the battlefield, this is reflected by his abilities. His passive, Painless, gives Guan Yu stacks each time he deals or takes damage. At 20 stacks the ability activates, once active, all of Guan Yu’s abilities gain extra effects. In essence, the abilities aren’t altered in any significant way, they just become much better at what they do.

Conviction is Guan Yu’s first ability. Conviction heals Guan Yu and any allies that are near Guan Yu at that moment, the amount that’s healed is multiplied if Painless is active. Not only does this ability heal everyone, but it also reduces the cooldowns of Guan Yu and his allies.

Warrior’s Will is Guan Yu’s second ability. Guan Yu charges forward with his Green Dragon Crescent Blade extended, damaging and slowing any enemies that are hit by it. This ability also lowers Guan Yu’s cooldowns if an enemy God is hit. If Painless is active, the slow percentage is doubled.

Taolu Assault is his third ability and is a channeling ability. Once activated, Guan Yu starts swinging his glaive in a circular motion, each time he hits an enemy he steals away some of his protections. If Painless is active, the amount of protections that are stolen is increased.

Finally, we come to Guan Yu’s ultimate, Cavalry Charge. Guan Yu mounts his warhorse and charges at his enemies. While the ability is active Guan Yu does increased damage and is immune to CCs. On top of that, any enemy hit is slowed, with the final dismounting hit also inflicting a short stun. If Painless is active, both the slow percentage and stun duration are increased.

Ideal Guan Yu Build

Guan Yu Build

With Guan Yu, you’re either going to be solo lane or jungling, though the latter case is pretty rare. This build takes the first case into consideration, so here’s how to optimally build out Guan Yu if you’re going solo lane.

At the start of the match get a Bluestone Pendant and a Breastplate along with some potions. For relics, get an Aegis Amulet and a Horrific Emblem. The latter is really good for engaging fights, especially if you’re ganking.

By the mid-game, you should upgrade your starting items into a Bluestone Brooch and a Breastplate of Regrowth. Following that, get a Gladiator’s Shield. With these three items built, you’ve practically rounded out your core items, now it’s time to focus on your damage-dealing capabilities. Grab a Brawler’s Beat Stick and a Serrated Edge. To finish the build, get an Oni Hunter’s Garb.

Tips for Playing With Guan Yu

  • Your combo should be in the following order, 2nd ability -> Horrific Emblem -> 3rd ability -> Ultimate
  • Don’t forget that your ultimate makes you immune to all types of CC, use it to quickly get away from unfavorable situations
  • Guan Yu is a pretty universal God, as such, you can play him in multiple roles. You can even play him as a support healer, however, your team will probably think you’re trolling if you do that
