Key Takeaways

  • D.Va plays well on maps with high ground thanks to her Boosters ability, which allows her to reposition and contest high ground consistently.
  • Her Defense Matrix ability makes her a very strong pick against certain hitscan and projectile heroes due to her ability to completely negate their damage output temporarily.
  • Much of D.Va’s skill expression revolves around knowing where to position and when, and eating crucial enemy damage (and ultimates) with her Defense Matrix.
  • D.Va potentially struggles against heroes with beam weapons, such as Zarya and Mei, due to her lack of defensive options against these types of weapons.

D.Va Quick Tips

  • D.Va has 650 total health while in her mech, with 350 regular HP and 300 armor.
  • If her mech reaches 0 HP or she uses her Self-Destruct ultimate, she pops out of her mech—to get your mech back, you must respawn or use her separate Call Mech ultimate.
  • She has 150 total health while not in her mech.
  • If damage (DPS) teammates create opportunities, D.Va is one of the best tanks to follow up and secure kills. Use the Z League app to find and queue with a competent team today.

Fusion Cannons (Primary Fire)

D.Va’s Fusion Cannons do not have to be reloaded and never overheat. While firing, D.Va’s movement speed is slowed, similar to Orisa’s primary fire.

Fusion Cannons are powerful up close, with significant damage drop off the further D.Va is from her target. At medium to long range, Fusion Cannons deal almost no damage, but can still be useful to damage support characters and prevent their self-healing passive from activating.

While firing from far away, her Fusion Cannons will still provide plenty of hit markers, which may lead less experienced players to sit back and use them at range to almost no effect. More experienced D.Va players generally understand that Fusion Cannons need to be used at close range, and will take space appropriately to allow for this to happen.

Defense Matrix

D.Va’s primary way to defend herself and her team is through her Defense Matrix ability. Defense Matrix is a metered resource. If Defense Matrix is activated, then deactivated, there is a small one second delay before it may be activated again.

Defense Matrix blocks (“eats”) projectiles only, such as Cassidy’s primary fire and Moira’s Biotic Orb. This fact makes her a threat to hitscan team compositions, but vulnerable to team composition which use beam weapons, such as those which have Zarya or Mei have. Defense Matrix also does not block Roadhog’s Chain Hook or Doomfist’s Rocket Punch.

Boosters

D.Va’s Boosters make her a highly mobile tank. With a short cooldown, she can frequently use her boosters to reposition, and move onto high ground at will. If Boosters are activated and D.Va makes contact with another player, the other player takes a small amount of damage and is booped slightly.

Micro Missiles

D.Va’s other main way to deal damage is through her Micro Missiles ability. Like her primary fire, Micro Missiles are most effective up close due to their wide spread as distance increases. Micro Missiles can be used while her primary fire is active or while Defense Matrix is activated.

Self-Destruct (Ultimate)

When Self-Destruct is used, D.Va pops out of her mech and the mech becomes a ticking time bomb. There is a three second fuse, and the bomb deals between 100 and 1,000 damage depending on how close enemy players are to the bomb. The bomb has a 20 meter radius overall and can be blocked by shields.

Before popping her ultimate, D.Va can use her Boosters ability to “throw” the bomb into anthe enemy team. With the right angles, Self-Destruct has the potential to quickly end a teamfight by securing multiple picks.

After the bomb explodes, D.Va is instantly credited with 100% ult charge on her separate ultimate, Call Mech. When Call Mech is used, a new, full HP mech drops down from the sky, dealing 250 damage to enemies within a 2.5 meter radius.
