At the beginning of 2022, Microsoft announced their intent to acquire Activision in an all-cash $68.7B buy-out. Since then, regulatory proceedings have slowed down the transaction process as the deal gets scrutinized. The latest blow comes from EU regulators where Microsoft is being examined for antitrust in this acquisition. What’s interesting is that it seems like Sony, the leader in console gaming, may be ramping up their lobbying activity to block this transaction. Frank X. Shaw, Microsoft’s VP of Communications took to Twitter, inciting that rumors are being spread by Sony to EU regulators regarding feature parity for Call of Duty:

Feature parity is extremely vital for Sony as the leader in console gaming as Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision could create an unfair advantage for XBOX that negatively impacts consumer choice. We’ll have to wait and see how things shake out as Microsoft awaits an expected Antitrust Warning notice from the European Commission.
