Why is TFT Economy Important?

One of the most crucial components of TFT that new players frequently overlook is managing your economy. The top TFT players know when to save their gold and when to spend it for a healthy TFT economy. As you advance through the game, the extra gold will help you make informed decisions. Adjusting to the game state increases your chances of success.

You’ll be able to discover greater consistency in your playstyle and advance much more quickly if you know how to manage your TFT economy well.

Board Spiking

How you handle your economy directly translates to your board strength. Over time your board should be getting stronger. However, this isn’t linear with time. To improve your board’s strength exponentially, we refer to a term called Board Spiking.

Board Spiking refers to spending your money to strengthen your board, for example:

  • Rolling for upgrades
  • Pivoting board: Changing your team composition for a different one
  • Levelling

How do we manage our TFT Economy?

An average TFT player will often approach the game with the mindset of saving money to either level up or roll for units at standard intervals. However, the correct move is to ask yourself if this is the right moment to spend your gold.

To understand the right moment, there are 3 main things to keep in mind:

  • Standard Intervals
  • The pace of the lobby
  • Streak Potential

Standard Intervals in TFT

The standard intervals will always be the 1st or 5th round of the stage which is generally agreed upon by experienced players to level up or roll. It is important to keep these intervals in mind because that’s when your opponents will strengthen their board.

A frequent question that ends up in the minds of TFT players is how much gold should I spend when spiking, and that can be answered by understanding the pace of the lobby.

The Pace of the Lobby

The pace of the lobby will be reflected by the average strength of a board in that lobby. For this, one must build a habit of looking at and evaluating your opponent’s boards. Certain key things to look for are the average level of the lobby and how strong their units are.

If the average board is considerably much stronger than yours, consider spiking your board so you do not bleed out your health. Otherwise, it is better to save your gold. The only exception is when you are Streaking.

Streaking in TFT

Streaking is when you win or lose consistently to generate an economy.

There will be times in the game when the lobby is significantly stronger than you, and this will cause you to lose many rounds. However, in TFT, you can actually make more Gold per round depending on how many rounds you lose. Hence players deliberately will sometimes play the weakest board in the lobby to make more gold. Now with the extra gold you have made, you can spike your board at a later standard interval to be a lot stronger than originally planned. This happens at Stage 2, generally when you are trying to make gold and maintaining health is not that important.

Ultimately it is up to the player to decide whether or not they want to play around their streak. Most of the time, your board strength might be just average, and it will be difficult to lose every fight.

The average player widely understands the general mechanics of TFT; however, what separates the average from the best is knowing what kind of mechanics to execute at the correct time. This is often difficult when a player’s decision-making is limited by their lack of TFT economy knowledge.

Remember, good economy management is a tool that will open up many pathways to success in the game of TFT. It is important to understand these fundamentals in order to bring out the best of your play style.
