It seems like things aren’t exactly steady in Apex Legends land. While the core game of Apex Legends has been experiencing growth in recent months, the shock cancellation of Apex Legends Mobile sent ripples through the online gaming community, seeing as the didn’t even hit 1 year since launch. While the Mobile cancellation was the poster child of Apex’s recent troubles, a lesser discussed (as it was never released) cancellation was the internal development of a Single Player mode that was considered a Titanfall project.

Per Jeff Grubb on the Giant Bomb podcast, the following are the available details for this now scrapped project:

  • A single player game that was set in the Titanfall and Apex Legends universe
  • Development team was led by Mohammad Alavi, who had worked on Titanfall, Apex Legends, as well as Call of Duty at Infinity Ward
  • The Single Player / Titanfall experience was a bid to create a larger ecosystem, similar to Call of Duty with MW2 and Warzone 2
  • Legends were to show up in-game to provide ‘special powers’
  • Inspiration was “John Wick Meets Tony Hawk”
  • BT was going to make a return as a playable character

Jeff speculates that the project was most likely doomed soon after Alavi’s departure (and perhaps departures of other key Respawn originators). Alavi left Respawn in January of 2022 and is currently working on a stealth startup.
