It’s hard to imagine being an online gamer and having not come across the letters LFG when chatting with other players. But what does it mean and where did this acronym come from?

LFG most commonly is an abbreviation for either “Looking for Group” or the related phrase, “Let’s F’ing Go” (to be exclaimed after finding said group!).

This is a phrase that has come out of necessity since the birth of online, co-op gameplay where, let’s face it – it’s infinitely more fun (and practical) to play in a group. Internet historians trace the origins of LFG to early MMORPGs (massive, multiplayer online role playing games), like Everquest, which is commonly credited as being the first truly successful MMORPG. LFG served a functional purpose as some quests were designed to be completed in groups.

Today, LFG has propagated far beyond its MMO origins as co-operative gameplay across many different genres has become the norm. You’ll see players ‘looking for group’ in MOBAS, like LoL and DOTA as well as shooters like Warzone, Apex Legends, and CS:GO everywhere you look.
