With the launch of the Warzone Season 2 update coming February 15th, players can expect a handful of changes to both the gameplay of Warzone, as well the user interface of Warzone 2.0 (we finally get a play again button!). While we don’t have the full details on all of these changes yet, Activision did give us an overview in their latest community blog. We’re here to break down some of the bigger changes so you’re ready for Season 2!

Download the Z League app, where you can register for tournaments, post your highlights, and find teammates using the LFG feature!

A huge difference between Warzone 1 and Warzone 2 was The Gulag. The Gulag is a central aspect of Warzone’s gameplay, as it allows players a second chance to rejoin the action. Players who have been killed in the game are sent to fight it out with other eliminated players. The winner of the battle is able to respawn and continue playing, while the loser is eliminated from the game. This mechanic puts the ability to return to action in the player’s hand, as opposed to other Battle Royale games where you are either eliminated when you die, or have to rely on your teammates to bring you back.

The original Gulag in Warzone 1 featured 1v1 fights, with a new gulag map coming every few seasons. With the launch of Warzone 2, players were introduced to 2v2 fights, where both players on the winning team returned to action, even if one was killed during the gulag fight. Additionally, the “jailor” was added, an AI juggernaut that entered the map after a few seconds, who if brought down would allow all 4 players to return.

The shift to 2v2 has come with mixed reviews. Some of the negative comments against the 2v2 Gulag revolve around the lack of communication between teammates, as you can get paired up with anyone and would need to use proximty chat to communicate. Additionally, players have complained about getting bad or AFK teammates, who hurt their chances of winning and getting back to the action.

Developers announced that season 2 will bring with it the return of the 1v1 Gulag. Hopefully players will feel like this change puts their fate back in their own hands instead of relying on random players they get paired up with. The developers also announced that new gulag maps will be coming, just not until after season 2. Many players are calling both of these announcements a win.
