If you’re new to League of Legends, you might be wondering what Vision Score is all about. The Vision Score is a metric that indicates how much of your team’s vision has been influenced by your play. It’s an indicator of a player’s contribution to their team’s control of the map. Mechanically, players can increase their Vision Score by placing wards as well as removing enemy wards (denying vision).

While the formulation for Vision Score has not been officially released by Riot, a fairly accurate estimation for Vision Score is:

  • 1 point per minute of ward lifetime provided
  • 1 point per minute of ward lifetime denied

Certain champion abilities that provide vision will also impact Vision Score. For example, Ashe’s Hawkshot or Kallista’s Sentinel, will reveal portions of the map for the benefit of your teammates in scouting out the enemy location.

The importance of vision cannot be understated in the game of League of Legends. As the game is fairly balanced as far as team vs. team games go, it doesn’t take much to tilt a game assuming all players are playing at a similar level. It’s all about gaining an information advantage over the enemy. For example, knowing that the enemy Jungle is top side will enable your bottom lane champions to play more aggressively and take bigger (but calculated) risks.
