Smite Guardians Guide

Welcome to our Smite Guardians Guide. The Guardian class is the Tank of Smite, a role people detest playing, but an essential one indeed.

Nobody likes getting hit in the face, that is, unless you’re a Guardian in Smite. Guardian is a bit of a misleading term if you look at it, as the Gods that are classified as Guardians do very little in terms of guarding… They do however do quite a lot in terms of making themselves an attractive punching bag.

Make no mistake, as a Guardian your main purpose is to go into the middle of the enemy formation and disrupt whatever it is that they are doing, and you’re very good at that. Most Guardians have spells that are geared towards initiating team fights and disrupting the enemy in some way or another.

The longer you can keep the enemy’s attention on you, the more of a chance your Mages, Warriors, Hunters, and Assassins have of doing the damage that will end up winning the team fights. To that end, being a Guardian isn’t like being a tree trunk… you’re more of a brick glazed in honey.

Key Takeaways for Smite Guardians Guide

  • Guardians are the Tanks of Smite
  • However, that doesn’t necessarily mean that you have to build every Guardian like a tank
  • A Guardians main concern should be disrupting the enemy and controlling the flow of team fights

What Kind of Playstyle Do Guardians Have in Smite?

Smite Guardian Guide Bacchus

As a Guardian, you’re automatically relegated to tank duties I’m afraid. This means that you’re going to have to focus on maximizing your Health and Protections at the cost of your damage output. Along with that, you also going to have to focus on disrupting the enemy more than doing any significant damage to them. Take Bacchus for example.

We looked at Bacchus recently in our Smite Bacchus Guide. Well, Bacchus is also one of the best Smite Gods, and probably the best Guardian in the game currently. But what makes Bacchus so good? Well, it’s the qualities that we just described.

Bacchus naturally has high Protections, plus, his first ability heals him. But the thing that truly makes Bacchus such a good Guardian is his abilities, most of his abilities disrupt the enemy in one way or another, be it a stun, a slow, or even by intoxicating them. Bacchus can easily get into the middle of an enemy’s formation, disrupt them so that they aren’t able to respond, and take the brunt of the damage once they finally regain their senses.

Of course, not every Guardian is “just a punching bag”. Some of them have quite a bite to them, like Ares for example. Even though Ares is a Guardian, you can comfortably play him with a Melee Mage’s build. Though to get the most out of Ares, you’re probably going to want to hit a perfect balance with his build. Get a few items for protection and a few offensive items and you’re basically set.

What Roles Can Guardians Fulfill?

Guardians are most commonly Tanks, but it isn’t unheard of a Guardian to go as a Support or even as a Jungler. The Guardian class is quite universal, not quite like the Warrior class, but close. You just need to change your play style to fit the role you’ve picked.

If you’re going as a Solo Lane, you don’t necessarily have to build your Guardian as a Tank, you can comfortably play with a more aggressive build. However, if you plan on being aggressive in the Solo Lane, then it’s probably a better idea to pick a Warrior instead. As a Guardian in the Solo Lane, it’s usually a much smarter idea to build yourself as a Tank – leave the aggression to the Jungler.

As a Support, you’re going to want to be very proactive in harassing the enemy team. The Guardian class is excellent for setting conditions and engaging the enemy, a capability that Mage Supports don’t have. So if you’re playing as a Support Guardian, be more aggressive than you’d usually be.

The Guardian doesn’t really shine as a Jungler that much, but it can fulfill that role regardless. One shortcoming of Guardians as Junglers is that they don’t have a lot of mobility, so if you’re set on jungling with a Guardian – have a Blink Rune.
